Description
This anthology contains a selection of thirty sacred songs from Charles Gounod to Jehan Alain for one voice with organ accompaniment (piano or harmonium). Dedicated exclusively to French composers, this anthology can be used for both concerts and church services. The vocal works listed in chronological order represent a highly interesting repertoire that invites you to study the development of the solo motet genre.
In addition to the 27 motets in Latin, the volume contains two French settings of the Lord's Prayer and a vocalise. Well-known motets such as César Franck's "Panis angelicus" or Gabriel Fauré's "O salutaris" stand alongside other, previously unpublished works, including the settings of the Lord's Prayer by André Caplet and Émile Goué as well as the two motets "O salutaris" with additional instrumental part (violin or violin or flute) by Joseph-Ermend Bonnal, which appear here in the first edition. Pieces that have long been out of print, such as Eugène Gigout's "Tota pulchra es" and Marcel Dupré's "Memorare", have also been made available again.
In the trilingual introduction (German, French, English), editor Helga Schauerte-Maubouet presents the musical sources and the historical context and addresses questions of interpretation, such as the pronunciation of the Latin text. All Latin texts appear in trilingual translation.
