What is the difference between a "violine" and a "geige"?

There is no difference; "violine" and "geige" are two different terms for the same wonderful instrument. "Violine" comes from Italian, while "geige" is more commonly used in the German-speaking area. We use both terms synonymously on our website.

How difficult is it to learn the violin?

Learning the violin can be challenging because it is a complex instrument with a steep learning curve. These three aspects are often considered difficult:

  1. Intensive fine motor skills: Playing the violin requires well-developed fine motor skills and dexterity to hold the bow correctly and draw it across the strings.
  2. Intonation and ear training: The violin has no frets like a guitar, which means you must learn and internalize the finger positions for each note through practice and listening.
  3. Endurance and patience: Mastering the violin takes a significant amount of time and regular practice. Progress may be slow and gradual, but every small improvement will make you proud and happy.

How expensive is a violin?

We firmly believe that everyone should have the opportunity to play the violin. However, we are also convinced that an instrument must meet a certain quality standard in order to provide lasting joy – both in terms of sound and playability, and also with regard to our environment. Our recommendation is to consider a violin from 3,000 CHF upwards. We offer the most affordable option from 1,800 CHF. For beginners or for trying out, you can also rent an instrument from us, complete with accessories.

At what age can one play the violin?

Children can start learning the violin at a very young age. By age 3, children generally have the basic motor skills needed for string instruments, although some violin teachers prefer to start at age 6.

Up to what age can one learn the violin?

One can learn to play the violin at any age! Even at 70 or older, you can still learn the violin, because the human brain remains capable of learning. It might take a little longer to get your finger dexterity up to speed, but with patience and passion, it will work out. Our book recommendation: Music knows no age.

Where can you get good violin lessons?

Music schools or private teachers – throughout Switzerland there are competent and empathetic violin instructors. Take advantage of trial lessons to see what suits you best. Online courses or self-study can also be an option, though more so for advanced players who already have a grasp on bowing techniques and finger movements.

How often should you practice the violin?

  • Recommendation for beginners: on average 20 minutes per day
  • To maintain your level: practice 30 minutes per day.
  • To steadily improve: practice 30–45 minutes per day

More important than the length of practice sessions is regularity and variety in violin practice. Even if you only have 5 minutes, do it anyway! Create a practice schedule and vary finger exercises, scales, etudes, and musical pieces.
