Description
This sonata goes back to Telemann's music journal "Der getreue Music-Meister" (1728) and appeared there in the 9th and 10th "Lection". The work combines compositional sophistication with practical playability: the different clef and key indications mean that it can also be played in alternative instrumentations - for example as a duet for viola and recorder (in B flat major) or as a sonata for viola and basso continuo.
The contrapuntal structure is particularly appealing: all four movements are worked as a strict canon and show Telemann's mastery of double counterpoint without sacrificing melodic charm and wit. The articulation and ornamentation markings in this edition are taken from Telemann's first edition.
