Our Social Commitment

Music education, the targeted promotion of music-making and musical understanding, has been a central concern of Musik Hug from the very beginning.

Not only was the publishing programme expanded in this respect: in 1982, to mark its 175th anniversary, Musik Hug established the foundation of the same name. Through this institution, activities are supported that “introduce children to music in a lively and engaging way and contribute to the development of their musical expression”. Numerous initiatives have attracted attention over the years, beginning with the “Konzert – extra für Chind” concerts, which were held in several Swiss cities in 1982 together with music educators Gabriela Kägi and Marc Philippe Meystre.

This was followed by initiatives under headings such as “Pop and Rock at School”, “Music and Video”, “Kids! Start a Band!” and “Experiential Workshop for Contemporary Classical Music”.

Since 2007, the Musik Hug Anniversary Foundation has helped to promote the concept of making music as a class. Every child in a school class is provided with an instrument and learns through play how to engage with music as part of a group. The central idea is to give as many children as possible the opportunity to hold and play an instrument and experience for themselves what it means to make music. This is not intended to replace individual lessons, but rather to prepare and motivate children for them. And so we return to the shared experience of making music, which, in a very different way, also lies at the beginning of Musik Hug's history. Making music creates a place and a moment in which people engage with one another. Understanding develops, energy is released and ideas are brought to life. This has been reflected in the company's history since 1807.
