Description
With "Im Frühling" (1954), Sergei Vasilenko shows his most colorful side: the five-movement suite is a late work that combines lyrical cantabile, elegant lines and finely nuanced moods - ideal for concerts, lessons and all those who appreciate romantic music with a touch of exotic soundscapes. The flute part is clearly in the foreground, while the piano paints the atmosphere and carries the character of the individual movements.
The composer himself is also an exciting discovery: Sergei Vasilenko (1872-1956) was a Russian-Soviet composer, conductor and long-time teacher at the Moscow Conservatory (1906-1950). After first studying law, he turned his attention entirely to music; his diploma thesis - a cantata opera - was awarded a gold medal. Vasilenko had a lasting influence on Moscow's musical life, contributed to the development of the young Soviet music scene after 1917 and was awarded a doctorate in art history in 1943. His students included Aram Khachaturian, Nikolai Roslavets, Nikolai Rakov and Aarre Merikanto. Stylistically, his spectrum ranges from his late Romantic heritage (initially influenced by Tchaikovsky) to later oriental and Central Asian influences.
