Description
The two-volume choral book "RUSSIA a cappella" closes a gap in Russian choral literature in an impressive way and also sets new standards in terms of content. With its first volume "Sacred Songs for Mixed Voices", it represents the range of Russian sacred a cappella choral art in an unprecedented scope. Divided into seven chapters, which are arranged chronologically to reflect the most important styles and trends, the 84 compositions in the book represent the entire historical development of Russian sacred choral music. In addition to the true classics, which should not be missing from any collection of this kind, you will also find many a discovery and even a first publication. A brief introduction to Orthodox church music, an informative historical overview of Russian sacred choral music, short biographies of all the composers in the collection and informative notes on the works included in the appendix provide the necessary background information and make a decisive contribution to understanding the pieces and their context.
Primarily oriented towards concert practice, the book offers a rewarding and varied repertoire for dedicated amateur choirs as well as for ambitious chamber and concert choirs. There are also compositions for use in church services; a thematic index shows the possible uses of the pieces in the church year. The musical text has been carefully edited using reliable sources. In addition to the original Church Slavonic texts in well thought-out phonetic transcription, all choral pieces contain singable German and English text translations based on the original. These have been specially prepared for this edition with the aim of leaving the musical material of the compositions untouched as far as possible - an undertaking realized for the first time in this consistency. Extensive accompanying material such as audio pronunciation aids, practice MP3s and choir recordings are available online.
