Workshop for Pianos and Grand Pianos

Musik Hug operates workshops for piano building throughout Switzerland and offers comprehensive services in the care, repair, tuning, and overhaul of pianos and grand pianos. Our highly trained piano builders, concert technicians, and piano masters service both concert instruments for renowned concert halls and music conservatories as well as pianos from private ownership. This ensures that your piano or grand piano is always in perfect, ready-to-play condition.

In our piano workshops in Bulach, Basel, Berne, Lucerne, Ecublens, Neuchâtel and Geneva, we carry out tuning, intonation, regulation, and repair work. These range from minor repairs to a complete overhaul of the acoustic system and mechanics. Our technicians assess the instrument, determine the requirements, and provide a cost estimate.

Pianos are delicate and complex instruments that require first-class care and maintenance. As a leading provider of grand pianos and pianos in Switzerland, we are committed to ensuring that musicians enjoy their piano for years to come and that the instrument is always perfectly tuned.

Piano Workshop Bülach

Piano lovers have access to a unique competence center for pianos and grand pianos in Bulach. In 2008, through an expansion to over 1,000 m², the largest piano workshop in Switzerland was established here. In Bülach, the instruments of thousands of piano enthusiasts are serviced. In the workshops themselves, comprehensive repairs are carried out on the acoustic systems. Our experts also perform re-stringing and handle all tasks related to the action of pianos, grand pianos, and harpsichords. The range of services is extremely varied.

In the adjacent grand piano hall, there is the opportunity to choose a concert grand for a special chamber music or solo performance. The tonal and technical refinement as well as the fine-tuning take place both in the concert halls and in the recording studios.

The piano workshop in Bülach provides answers to all questions concerning the world’s most popular keyboard instrument: from the expertise of a square piano from the 18th century – whose insurance value is to be appraised – to the creative realization of your own ideas regarding the design of a modern piano case, up to the complete overhaul of a concert grand.

Concert Technicians

Concert technicians are familiar with all the tricks of piano building. They navigate successfully in the environment of large concert halls and feel at home on the concert stage. Their profound professional background forms the basis for the necessary confidence and sensitivity in handling the instruments and the performers.

Career Profiles in Our Workshops

The profession of “piano tuner” used to be a distinct trade and remains so in the training of the visually impaired and blind, who are renowned for their exceptionally well-trained hearing. Today, professional tuning is also part of the four-year training program for piano builders. Depending on talent and inclination, one can choose the extent of specialization in the acoustic field. The profession of piano builder is no longer male-dominated; the proportion of women is steadily increasing. During the four-year apprenticeship, trainees gain insights into all aspects of piano construction.

To qualify for the master craftsman exam as a piano and harpsichord builder, at least three years of journeyman experience are required after the apprenticeship, during which practical experience is gathered. Typical work areas include stringing new strings, regulating and fine-tuning the mechanism, shaping the tonal quality through intonation, and tuning.

Usually, in this phase of training, the piano builder deepens their knowledge through a traineeship (Volontariat), which allows for specialization in a particular area of piano construction. Traineeships at Steinway & Sons and the Steinway Academy—established specifically for concert technicians—have proven particularly successful.
