Description
This edition is dedicated to Claude Debussy's famous Deux Arabesques for piano, which were signed on April 11, 1891 by the renowned music publisher MM. Durand, Schoenewerk & Cie in Paris on April 11, 1891. The term "arabesque" had no fixed stylistic meaning for Debussy - rather, it served him as a poetic image for music of a curved, flowing character. He associated it with agility, elegance and almost vocal lines - music that sought to free itself from metrical rigidity and the emphasis on the beat.
Particularly noteworthy is the transcription for pedal harp included here, made by Henriette Renié, an important pupil of Alphonse Hasselmans at the Paris Conservatoire. This arrangement represents the first known transcription of the Deux Arabesques to another instrument and opens up a fascinating sonic view of Debussy's early impressionistic handwriting.
The edition is complemented by a historical introduction by Edmond Lemaître in French and English, which offers valuable insights into the genesis and cultural context of the work. A must for all lovers of impressionist music and harp literature.
